In Grenada there is a merger of tropical climate, volcanic soil, mountainous terrain, tropical seas and coral reefs. These conspire together to produce the most incredibly varied array of food ingredients. There is more diversity and depth of flavours than anywhere else in the world. There are flavours that explode with depth of taste. If you stay in a Siesta one-bedroom apartment you have the opportunity to sample and savour this array from the comfort of your own kitchen.
It seems that wherever you go in Grenada somebody is there by the roadside or shore selling foodstuffs. Fruit and vegetable stalls appear to be everywhere and the quality and quantity of items is simply amazing. Try cooking with callaloo ( a leaf vegetable) or the local pumpkin, christophene, bluggoes ( a cooking banana) or eddoes (a root vegetable). Grenada produces some of the best hot pepper sauce in the world, if you like your food spiced up. But since Grenada is the Isle of Spice, all your culinary endeavours can be enhanced with the best spices in the world. Grenada produces the very best nutmeg, cinnamon, bay and a huge variety of other spicy wonders.
If you love fish and seafood, you must try cooking with the lovely catch of the day that local fishermen will sell you. They sell this from their boats, from the beach, and from piers and jetties. Some will come around with their fish in a bucket or basket. They announce their presence and availability of the catch by blowing a loud honk on a conch shell! You can try Caribbean delights like Moonfish, Couvalli, Ocean Buss, Parrot Fish, Ocean Gar and Jacks. It is delightful to cook these when they are fresh and newly caught. Try grilling them and eating them with a squeeze of lemon for a magically tasty treat. This is where an apartment with a stove comes into its own! That “straight out of the sea and into your kitchen” flavour cannot be beaten!
There are a variety of Grenadian cookbooks on sale to help you try authentic Spice Island cooking in your apartment kitchen. Two of these are “Great Grenada Recipes” and “Great Grenada Fish and Seafood Recipes,” by Wendy Hartland. Both can be bought in Grenada supermarkets.
Out of all Grenada hotels, Grand Anse offers the widest choice of activities. A Siesta Hotel one-bedroom apartment offers the widest flexibility for trying that choice.
